Cracked Molar Repair With Same-Day Crowns

At Accent Dentists, we can often repair a cracked, chipped or broken molar with a ceramic crown made right here in our Ponsonby clinic. Using advanced digital dentistry, we scan the tooth, design the crown and create it in-clinic - often allowing us to complete the treatment in a single visit.

A same-day crown is designed to strengthen and protect the damaged tooth while restoring its natural shape and function. Dr Matt and our clinical team carefully design each crown to fit comfortably, work with your bite and blend naturally with your smile.

  • The first step is assessing the tooth to understand the extent of the crack and whether a same-day crown is the right treatment.

    If the tooth can be restored with a crown, we carefully prepare it before using our PrimeScan 3D scanner to create a highly accurate digital model of your teeth. This means there is usually no need for traditional dental impressions.

    Using the digital scan, we design your crown on screen, refining its shape, fit and bite before it is made. The final design is then milled from a high-quality ceramic block here in the clinic.

    Once the crown has been milled, it is finished, fired and glazed before being fitted securely over the prepared tooth - often allowing us to complete the treatment in a single visit.

  • Same-day crowns can be a very effective option for many cracked, chipped or broken molars, particularly where a significant amount of tooth structure has been damaged.

    A crown covers and protects the remaining tooth, helping to restore its strength, shape and function. This can be particularly useful for back teeth because they need to withstand considerable force when you bite and chew.

    Every cracked or broken tooth is different. The appropriate treatment depends on where the crack is, how far it extends and the condition of the remaining tooth. Dr Matt or one of our dentists will assess the tooth first and explain whether a same-day crown is suitable or whether another treatment would be more appropriate.

  • Once your tooth has been scanned, we use digital software to design your new crown.

    Your dentist can adjust the:

    • Shape

    • Contours

    • Fit

    • Bite

    The final design is then sent to our in-clinic milling machine, where the crown is made from a ceramic block.

    We then fire and glaze the ceramic, check the fit and bond it securely into place.

    The result is a crown that is designed specifically for your tooth and can often be completed from scan to finished crown in one appointment.
